Summer Movie Guide (JULY)

Hey guys, it's the last day of June so I thought I would give you a nice little update on some of the big title movies coming out in the month of July that you might want to check out:

SUMMER MOVIE GUIDE - JULY

JULY 1ST

Public Enemies
Starring: Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard
Director: Michael Mann
Trailer: View Here

Holy crap...A summer action film that's based on real-life gangsters and not some big comic book franchise! Throw in two of the biggest stars in Hollywood, an Academy Award-winning actress, and the director of 'Heat' and 'Collateral' and you've got a film that's destined to be great.

JULY 10TH

Brüno
Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen
Director: Larry Charles
Trailer: View Here

Sacha Baron Cohen proves yet again that he is absolutely fearless. Just from the 2 minute trailer we can tell this movie will be bigger, more offensive, and more controversial than 2006's 'Borat.'

JULY 15TH

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Michael Gambon
Director: David Yates
Trailer: View Here

Perhaps the last film of the summer that actually has a chance at giving 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' a run for it's money.

JULY 17TH (Limited release)

(500) Days of Summer
Starring: Zooey Deschanel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Director: Marc Webb
Trailer: View Here

A nice little romantic indie-comedy starring the absolutely adorable Zooey Deschanel and the super underrated Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Although it will probably be limited to very few theaters, this one is definitely a must-see.

JULY 24TH

G-Force
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Tracy Morgan, Sam Rockwell, Penélope Cruz
Director: Hoyt Yeatman
Trailer: View Here

A 3-D Disney family comedy / Jerry Bruckheimer production about guinea pig spies! This movie has summer blockbuster written all over it.

The Ugly Truth
Starring: Gerard Butler, Katherine Heigl
Director: Robert Luketic
Trailer: View Here

Whoa, an R-rated romantic comedy! This one has the potential to beat out 'The Proposal' for "the romantic comedy of the summer"

JULY 31ST

Funny People
Starring: Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann
Director: Judd Apatow
Trailer: View Here

We've seen Adam Sandler do stand-up comedy. We've seen him do drama. So why not combine the two...and then add Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow (the 'King Midas' of comedy films)? This is the movie I have been anxiously waiting for since I saw the trailer back in the beginning of the year.

RELEASE DATES
July 1st - Public Enemies
July 10th - Brüno

Michael Jackson's shocking death has prompted an outpouring of grief from people all across the world. Here are some of the tributes paid to him from people of the entertainment industry who were close friends, colleagues, or great admirers:

It's just hard to realize that Michael Jackson is not here.... As a kid Michael was always beyond his years, he was an innovator, he was a genius at what he did. He had a knowingness about him. At 9 years old, when I first started working with him, he seemed to me like he had been here before. He was just so knowledgeable about life."

Justin Timberlake: "We have lost a genius and a true ambassador of not only pop music, but of all music. He has been an inspiration to multiple generations, and I will always cherish the moments I shared with him onstage and all of the things I learned about music from him and the time we spent together."

Madonna: "I can't stop crying over the sad news. I have always admired Michael Jackson. The world has lost one of the greats, but his music will live on forever! My heart goes out to his three children and other members of his family. God bless."

Arnold Schwarzenegger: "We lost a great entertainer and a pop icon. My thoughts and prayers go out to Michael Jackson's family, friends and fans."

P. Diddy: "Michael Jackson showed me that you can actually see the beat. He made the music come to life!! He made me believe in magic. I will miss him!"

John Mayer: "Dazed in the studio. A major strand of our cultural DNA has left us. RIP MJ. I think we'll mourn his loss as well as the loss of ourselves as children listening to Thriller on the record player."

Pete Wentz: "Prayers and thoughts with Michael Jackson ... I haven't hope in so long that news isn't true."

Beyonce: "He was magic...He was what we all strive to be. He will always be the King of Pop!"

Usher: "May God cover you Michael. We all lift your name up in prayer. I pray for the entire Jackson family particularly Michael's mother, children and all his fans that loved him so much. I would not be the artist, performer, and philanthropist I am today without the influence of Michael."

John Legend: "As a child of the '80s, I feel as though his music and his videos have been an inseparable part of my life and that of an entire generation. And the powerful thing about great music is that it will always live on. He was and always will be an icon."

R. Kelly: "I am truly saddened that my mentor, brother, and friend will no longer be with us physically. At the same time, I feel so blessed to have been touched by his music, his dance, his lyrics, and his pure genius. It is because of Michael's yesterday that I am who I am today!"

Celine Dion: "I am shocked. I am overwhelmed by this tragedy. Michael Jackson has been an idol for me all my life."

Sheryl Crow: "I can't say how grateful I am, especially now, that I had the opportunity to observe his greatness every single night. Because every night he really was truly an incredible performer."

Fergie: "We have lost one of the greatest icons of all time. He forever set the bar for entertainers all around the world."

Liza Minnelli: "He was a kind, genuine and wonderful man. He was also one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived. I loved him very much and I will miss him every remaining day of my life."

Steven Spielberg: "Just as there will never be another Fred Astaire or Chuck Berry or Elvis Presley, there will never be anyone comparable to Michael Jackson. His talent, his wonderment and his mystery make him legend."

Martin Scorsese: "Michael Jackson was extraordinary. When we worked together on 'Bad', I was in awe of his absolute mastery of movement on the one hand, and of the music on the other. Every step he took was absolutely precise and fluid at the same time. It was like watching quicksilver in motion."

Cher: "When I think of him, I think of this young boy, this teenager I first met … He was a great teenager, optimistic and adorable."

Ellen DeGeneres: "So sad to hear about Michael Jackson. His music changed our lives. The world has lost an amazing singer and dancer. I will miss him."

Kris Allen: "He was the most influential musical person that I had in my life. On the artist side of things, everything that he did was just so right. Every album that he did, it hit you in a way that just made you feel good. It made you feel him and feel his music. He was a genius, a complete genius."

Adam Lambert: "His voice was just one of a kind. No one else sounds like him. Furthermore, the visual stuff he brought to the table was so groundbreaking and edgy and ahead of its time, in a way. There wasn't anyone else really going out there like that."

'Picks of the Week' (June 26th)

Here are the top five things I am loving this week:

5. "21 Guns" by Green Day

Simple melody, super catchy hook, and lots of political angst: After eight studio albums, the classic pop-punk trio has still got it.

4. Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Earlier this week USA Today released some concept art and publicity images from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland including this creepy image of Johnny Depp as the 'Mad Hatter.' These fantastic images just give me more reason to be excited for the film's March 2010 release.

3. Away We Go

A great little summer indie-comedy directed by Sam Mendes (Revolutionary Road, American Beauty) starring The Office's John Krasinski and former SNL member Maya Rudolph). The film takes us on a hilarious, yet heartfelt journey of an expecting couple struggling to find themselves. Outstanding performances from the two stars as well as the supporting cast that includes some familiar faces.

2. Megan Fox in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Say what you want about the Transformers sequel. Sure it was too loud, too long, and too over-the-top...but what the hell were you expecting?? Love it or hate it, I hope we can all agree on the choice to give it's super sexy co-star much more screen-time this time around...and you gotta admit: her acting has improved...a little...kind of.

1. The Music of Michael Jackson

Like most of the world, I was shocked and devastated when I heard the news about the sudden death of Michael Jackson, one of the biggest superstars in the world. But rather than dwelling on the negative, I think we should celebrate Michael's amazing life. Although he is no longer with us, Michael Jackson will live on forever with his legacy of No. 1 hits, ground-breaking performances and astounding dance moves. So what better way to remember "The King of Pop" than through the fantastic music he shared with the world:

Remembering 'The King of Pop'

Entertainer Michael Jackson (age 50) has died after being taken to a hospital on Thursday after suffering cardiac arrest, according to multiple reports including the Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press. Read more about it here.

This could possibly be the most shocking death of an entertainment superstar since John Lennon in 1980. In the 1980s, Michael Jackson was the biggest star in the world. He was undoubtedly the biggest musician of my lifetime. He revolutionized the music video. His most famous album, Thriller is the world's best selling album of all time. Songs like "Billie Jean", "Beat It" and "Thriller" will live on for centuries. He was truly a musical legend.

Today I kindly ask everyone to put Michael's troubled personal issues and molestation allegations aside, and pay respect to the extraordinary life of 'The King of Pop.' He was a greatly gifted artist, but also he was the father of three children. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Please watch this video of M.J. as he debuted his signature "moonwalk" while performing "Billie Jean" on the Motown 25th anniversary special:

82nd Academy Awards to Feature 10 Best Picture Nominees

Yesterday, the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis announced that the 82nd Academy Awards (which will be presented on March 7, 2010) will have 10 feature films competing in the Best Picture category. In his statement Ganis said:
"After more than six decades, the Academy is returning to some of its earlier roots, when a wider field competed for the top award of the year...The final outcome, of course, will be the same – one Best Picture winner – but the race to the finish line will feature 10, not just five, great movies from 2009."

Typically, only five films compete for the top prize at the annual
Academy Awards. The last year to have an expanded list of nominees was 1943 during the 16th Academy Awards when Casablanca won over nine other candidates.

---------------------------------------------

What do you guys think of the decision to include 10 films in the Best Picture category? Do think it was fine with only 5? Will it allow a more diverse array of movies to be nominated (i.e. action or animation films)? Are there any movies that already came out that you think have a great shot and being nominated for Best Picture next year? Feel free to share your thoughts!

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Based on early reviews from some of the top film critics, the sequel to 2007's Transformers has already received mixed to negative reception. Although I believe some of the critics are being way too harsh, the fact of the matter is that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is NOT a movie for everyone to enjoy. So for those of you who are on the fence about going to see it, I thought I would try to break it down for you...

Reasons to Go See Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
- You're a fan of the Transformers franchise and/or loved the first film.
- You love Michael Bay films (i.e. The Rock, Armageddon, The Island, etc.)
- You enjoy loud, in-your-face computer-generated action sequences.
- You enjoy hot babes, talking robots, fast cars, and big explosions.
- You think Megan Fox is the hottest woman on the planet.
- You love any film that involves Shia LaBeouf.

Reasons to NOT See Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
- You did not enjoy the first film.
- You hate or dislike Shia LaBeouf and/or Megan Fox.
- You think robots are stupid.
- You are looking for a plot-driven action film.
- You hate movies with too many computer-generated special effects.
- You are looking for a movie with outstanding acting performances.
- You are offended by racial stereotypes in film.
- You can't stand movies that are over 2 hours long.

My Thoughts
Watching Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was much like watching fireworks: It was loud, it was exciting, and it was fun to watch...But you can only watch fireworks for so long. Some of the special effects/action sequences were a little too over-the-top, the plot seemed to be all over the place, and the film itself was way too long. But at the same time, after watching the first Transformers film, that is exactly what I was expecting from the sequel. This movie succeeded at being longer, louder, bigger, and even more imaginative than the first one.
The filmmakers knew exactly what their target demographic was and did just about everything right to satisfy those viewers.

One of the things I really enjoyed about Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was the use of comedy throughout the movie because it reminded us not to take this film so seriously. The combination of humor, spectacular visual effects, and of course the incredibly hot Megan Fox is what made Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen a fun and enjoyable film for me to watch.

However, in comparison to other summer movies I have seen thus far...Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen falls short of making my top rankings. In my opinion, Star Trek was a far superior 'summer action film.' It had a solid plot, outstanding performances from the entire cast, a super attractive female actress, and included intense action sequences / special effects that were never too over-the-top.

In Conclusion
If you didn't enjoyed the first Transformers film, had mixed feelings about it, or just had no interest in even seeing it...chances are that you will not enjoy the sequel. But if you loved the first Transformers film and you love mindless, special effects driven action films...then by all means go see the sequel ASAP.

Jon & Kate announce their 'separation'

Last night, during TLC's much-promoted episode of the hit series Jon & Kate Plus 8, Jon and Kate Gosselin, the parents of eight children, announced they were "separating." Moments later, text appeared on the screen adding that the couple had decided to "legally dissolve" their 10-year marriage. They went on to explain that the children will stay in the house, while the two parents will switch off living there. Both parents have stated that the show will continue to air, however a spokesperson for TLC says that with the exception of a clip show next Monday, the next new episode of "Jon & Kate Plus 8" won't air until August 3rd.

Although Kate denied that the program was responsible for their decision to separate, there is no doubt that the increased exposure from the media and the paparazzi / tabloids have affected their lives. I know many of you are thinking, "Who cares?" "It's just a stupid reality TV show." But the fact of the matter is that this is not some fabricated MTV/VH1 reality show. Whether or not you agree with the family's choice to be in the public eye, you must realize that the pain and hardships the Gosselins (especially the eight children) are facing right now are very, very real. My thoughts go out to the family and I hope they can all make it through these hard times.

Sneak Peak: Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland'

If you were amazed by Tim Burton's off-beat reinvention of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, then you are in for quite a treat with Burton's latest project... Alice in Wonderland. USA Today has recently released some concept art and publicity images from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland featuring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. The rest of the cast includes: Michael Sheen, Mia Wasikowska, Matt Lucas, Crispin Glover, Stephen Fry and Alan Rickman. According to the article, the film's plot is almost like a sequel to the original Lewis Carroll tale. The movie is set to be released on March 5, 2010. Here are some of the images featured in the article:

The Best (and Worst) Movie Dads

In spirit of Father's Day I compiled a list of some of the most memorable 'Movie Dads.' Check it out, and feel free to share your thoughts or your own picks for the best and worst dads in film:

5 Best Movie Dads

5. Mac MacGuff, Juno (played by J.K. Simmons)

A dad who is funny / sarcastic yet also very caring and understanding. Even after finding out his teenage daughter is pregnant, Mac MacGuff is still able to keep his cool and do anything to help her out.

4. Marlin, Finding Nemo (voiced by Albert Brooks)

Sure Marlin was a little over-protective at first, but how can you blame him? After losing Nemo, he lets his guard down and does anything and everything to get him back.

3. Mr. Levenstein, American Pie series (played by Eugene Levy)

Jim's dad is the kind of dad who isn't afraid to talk to his son about anything. Sure his advice about sex, love, masturbation, etc. is often horrendously awkward, but at the end of the day he is really just looking out for his son.

2. Daniel Hillard, Mrs. Doubtfire (played by Robin Williams)

Daniel Hillard cares so much about his kids that he is willing to dress up as an old lady and pose as a nanny just to spend time with them. Now that's dedication.

1. Chris Gardener, The Pursuit of Happyness (played by Will Smith)

Despite desperately struggling to make money and find a home, Chris Gardener does whatever it takes to support his son. For that he truly deserves a 'World's Best Dad' award.

5 Worst Movie Dads

5. Jack Byrnes, Meet the Parents/Fockers (played by Robert De Niro)

The father-in-law from hell: a former CIA agent who is constantly giving his daughter's boyfriend a hard time, always watching him through surveillance cameras and even forcing him to take a polygraph test.

4. Royal Tenenbaum, The Royal Tenenbaums (played by Gene Hackman)

Stealing money, blaming his kids for the divorce, and pretending to be dying just to move back home...Royal Tenenbaum is not exactly the ideal father figure.

3. Dr. Evil, Austin Powers series (played by Mike Myers)

No one wants a dad who cares more about killing his arch-nemesis and spending time with his miniature clone than listening to his own son...in fact, he tells him to 'zip-it' every time he has something to say.

2. Lester Burnham, American Beauty (played by Kevin Spacey)

This pot-smoking, fast food working dad is more dedicated to scoring with his daughter's hot friend than keeping his dysfunctional family together.

1. Jack Torrence, The Shining (played by Jack Nicholson)

A dad who forces you to live in an isolated hotel and then goes crazy and tries to kill your family probably isn't the 'world's best dad.'

Thanks for reading my list, guys. Happy Father's Day!

'Picks of the Week' (June 19)

So borrowing from Entertainment Weekly's feature called 'The Must List', every Friday I will be featuring things relating to music, movie, TV, pop culture, or just something completely random that I love from that week. So here are my Top 5 picks for the week of June 19th:

5. "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)" by Jay-Z

Jay-Z takes shots at 'Auto-Tune' rappers by dropping a single titled "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)." Sure anyone can bash this annoyingly over-done trend in hip-hop music today, but at least Jay-Z has the talent to back it up.

4. S'mores

The perfect summer treat. Nothing beats spending a beautiful summer night sitting around a fire with your friends, listening to good music, roasting marshmallows, and eating s'mores.

3. Taylor Swift Raps w/ T-Pain on CMT Awards

Speaking of 'auto-tune'...check out this video with T-Pain and Taylor Swift (aka "T-Swizzle"). So what if the whole thing seemed like a rip-off of The Lonely Island's Natalie Portman rap and "I'm on a Boat"? It was still hilarious and probably the highlight of the entire awards ceremony.

2. Megan Fox

With Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen coming out next week, Megan Fox can be found everywhere: promo pictures, Moscow, London, Berlin, South Korea, Tokyo, Entertainment Weekly, GQ, etc. If the smokin' hot Megan Fox doesn't convince you to see the new Transformers movies, I don't know what will.

1. Obama Swats a Fly

It's a little sad that the most memorable part of a CNBC interview with President Obama is when he impressively swats a nagging fly. With that being said, I still cannot deny how awesome it was.

What were YOUR favorite picks of the week?? Feel free to share songs, video clips, articles or your thoughts, comments, opinions, etc.

The Hangover (The Summer's Sleeper Hit)

Two weekends ago, The Hangover debuted at number #1 in the box office - knocking Disney/Pixar's big summer flick, Up from the top spot. The film - which only cost $31 million to make - hauled in $45 million in it's opening weekend. The Hangover has exceeded it's expectation as the raunchy comedy hit of the summer, opening higher than films like Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Wedding Crashers. In fact, the film had the third highest grossing debut for an R-rated comedy - only behind Sex and the City ($57 million) and American Pie 2 (45. 1 million). But unlike those two films, The Hangover did not have the support of an existing franchise. The film didn't even have any big-name stars attached to it: all it had was journeyman supporting actor Bradley Cooper, The Office's Ed Helms, and stand-up comic Zach Galifianakis. (Oh yeah, and a cameo from boxing superstar Mike Tyson)

So how did this movie become so popular? Well Warner Bros. did their research. The studio screened it over 400 times and even had the cast promote the film around college campuses. Much like other movies of it's genre (like Harold and Kumar and Dude Where's My Car?), the film's popularity is driven by the curiosity of what happened to the main characters during / after one crazy night. Warner Bros.' research suggested that 52% of the audience was male and 53% was under 25 years old.

As this summer's first surprise hit, The Hangover proves that despite all the hype surrounding unnecessary sequels and remakes, an original R-rated comedy film can still succeed. The film just celebrated it's second weekend at the top spot of the box office and is on track to earn at least $200 million. If you still haven't seen The Hangover, I highly suggest that you go check it out.

Music Monday #2

So I've been in a pretty big Led Zeppelin mood this past week. On Friday, two of my buddies and I just sat around a bonfire and listened to Led Zeppelin for hours. We tried to pick out our favorite song, but there are so many amazing Zeppelin songs that it was just way too difficult to pick one. But here is one that would definitely make my Top 5...it is the
'The Ocean' from their 1973 album Houses of the Holy:

Kanye West on Kris Allen's 'Heartless'

What did Kanye West think of American Idol winner Kris Allen's rendition of "Heartless"?

"Man," Kanye West sighs over the phone from his New York City home. "I'm so happy that he performed it on his road to victory. I'm just really happy that he involved my song. That my songs are a part of people's consciousness spirit like that is amazing."

Kanye was also asked about it again while appearing on The View yesterday to which he said, "Everyone who sings the song sings it better than me." Check out this video at around the 4:04 mark to see Kanye's reaction to Kris's performance:

Music Monday #1

So I finally started watching the TV show How I Met Your Mother last week and I must say that I am pretty hooked. In addition to having a hilarious cast, the show features a lot of great music. The most recent episode I've seen (the Season 2 Premiere) featured this fantastic acoustic cover of The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry" by Grant-Lee Phillips. Listen to it here:

June Indie Movies

So last week, I posted a 'Summer Movie Guide' for the month of June...However, I realized that I left out two lesser-known indie films coming out this month that look great. Unfortunately they will both be limited releases, so you might have to search for where you can see them.

An indie comedy-drama featuring an outstanding cast and the director of American Beauty and Revolutionary Road. Looks like a good heart-felt film to escape all the big hyped up summer action movies.
