Last night, during TLC's much-promoted episode of the hit series Jon & Kate Plus 8, Jon and Kate Gosselin, the parents of eight children, announced they were "separating." Moments later, text appeared on the screen adding that the couple had decided to "legally dissolve" their 10-year marriage. They went on to explain that the children will stay in the house, while the two parents will switch off living there. Both parents have stated that the show will continue to air, however a spokesperson for TLC says that with the exception of a clip show next Monday, the next new episode of "Jon & Kate Plus 8" won't air until August 3rd.
Although Kate denied that the program was responsible for their decision to separate, there is no doubt that the increased exposure from the media and the paparazzi / tabloids have affected their lives. I know many of you are thinking, "Who cares?" "It's just a stupid reality TV show." But the fact of the matter is that this is not some fabricated MTV/VH1 reality show. Whether or not you agree with the family's choice to be in the public eye, you must realize that the pain and hardships the Gosselins (especially the eight children) are facing right now are very, very real. My thoughts go out to the family and I hope they can all make it through these hard times.
