'Harry Potter 6' Pulls in $22.2 Million

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
earned an estimated $22.2 million for its 3,003 midnight screenings, beating the previous midnight record of $18.5 million set last summer by the The Dark Knight and the $16.9 million earned by Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.

The film is already off to a stronger start than the last Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which opened on the same Wednesday two years ago. Order of the Phoenix grossed $12 million in midnight runs on its way to posting a five-day total of $139.7 million.

As much as I don't really care for the Harry Potter franchise, this is rather big news. I will definitely be keeping tally on H6's numbers and any other records it might break...and maybe I might actually consider seeing it in a few weeks...

Obama at the All-Star Game

Tuesday night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, MO: President Barack Obama threw out the ceremonial first pitch to St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols before this year's Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Obama is now the first sitting president since Gerald Ford in 1976 to throw out the first pitch at an All-Star Game.

The President showed some "south-side love" by sporting a Chicago White Sox jacket - when explaining why he wore White Sox gear he said: "Everybody knows I'm a White Sox fan, and my wife thinks I look cute in this jacket. Between those two things...why not?"

Check out the video of Obama's first pitch here:

The American League ended up defeated the National League 4 to 3. The American League All-Star team has now won 12 of the last 13 All-Star games (there was a TIE in 2002).

I don't care about Harry Potter...

Sorry guys...but I just never got into this whole "Harry Potter craze." I never read a book and never saw a movie, so I'm not going to sit here and bash the franchise and all it's fan because I literally know nothing about Harry Potter to make fun of it about. While I am fully aware of all the buzz surrounding tonight's release of the highly anticipated sixth film of the series
: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (and I'll admit that the previews actually made the film look pretty cool)...the chances are that this is one big summer flick I will most likely pass on seeing.

BUT...here are two
non-Harry Potter movies coming out soon that I am actually super excited for:

Ryan Reynolds Lands "Green Lantern"

Warner Bros. Picture has hired Ryan Reynolds to play the title role in the highly anticipated Green Lantern, their live-action film based on the popular DC Comics superhero. Other actors who were in the running included The Hangover star Bradley Cooper and famous pop-star Justin Timberlake. The film will be directed by Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, Casino Royale) and produced by Donald De Lin and Greg Berlanti. Berlanti along with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green wrote the script. Production is expected to start in January 2010 and the film is scheduled for a June 17, 2011 release.

This is turning out to be quite a memorable summer for Ryan Reynolds. Earlier this summer, Reynolds had a supporting role as Deadpool in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", a performance that prompted Fox to begin development on a spin-off film to which Reynolds is attached. He then followed that by starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy "The Proposal," which crossed the $100 million mark this week.

The actor will next star in a dark indie drama called "Buried" that will start filming shortly in Barcelona with Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes. Reynolds will be playing a civilian contractor who is kidnapped in Iraq and awakes in a coffin, struggling against time to coordinate a rescue even though he doesn't know where he's buried in the desert.

'Picks of the Week' (July 10th)

5. Entourage (Season 6)

Okay, so the sixth season doesn't actually start until Sunday Night...but with HBO releasing this teaser and dozens of promo pictures, I can't help but get excited for the brand new season. *Note: Looks like Sloan (the gorgeous Emmanuelle Chriqui) is finally be back...NICE!

4. Last Chance Harvey

A fantastic romantic comedy starring veteran actors Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. Like all romance stories, it's a little contrived and sappy at times but that's all outweighed by the chemistry and heartfelt performances from the two stars. Overall it's an honest and funny film that has been overlooked by many and I highly suggest you go rent it and check it out.

3. Brendon Urie covers "Three Little Birds"

Earlier this week, Panic At the Disco announced that Ryan Ross and Jon Walker would be leaving the band to explore music on their own. However, Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith made it clear that Panic at the Disco is still "alive and very very well." And as a nice little bonus, Brendon released an mp3 of his awesome cover of "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley.

2. Michael Jackson Memorial

On Tuesday afternoon, thousands of people gathered at the Staples Center to pay tribute to Michael Jackson. The memorial featured several powerful performances from friends and admirers of Michael. You can watch them all here.

1. Nothing Personal - All Time Low

This week I attended a free MySpace secret show featuring All Time Low in Orland Park. It was part of their "three shows / three cities in one day" promotion for their brand new album "Nothing Personal." Despite being slightly overwhelmed by the swarm of teenage girls in attendance, I thought the guys put on a great show. Their new material is great, and Nothing Personal is turning out to be the perfect pop punk soundtrack for my summer. Check out the video for "Weightless" here...look out for the cameos from Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy and Mark Hoppus of Blink-182!

"Jennifer's Body" EXCLUSIVE Red Band Trailer

Good news, Megan Fox fans! The Transformers hottie will be tackling her first lead role in a horror/comedy called "Jennifer's Body" written by Diablo Cody (screenwriter of Juno) about a high school cheerleader who becomes possessed by a demon and begins to feed off of the guys in her town. The film is set to be released on September 18th, 2009, but yesterday the filmmakers released the "red-band" trailer (restricted) online even before the "green-band" (all-audience) trailer hits theaters. Here is what filmmakers Karyn Kusama (director), Diablo Cody (writer), and Jason Reitman (producer) had to say about it:

"FOX is putting a trailer of "Jennifer's Body" in front of "Bruno" this Friday. Great, right? Only problem is it's not our trailer. It's kind of a straight horror preview and while we're sure it'll appeal to many of you, we wanted to make sure you guys got to see our cut... Lets call it the "filmmaker's cut". We think it captures the comedy and scares of the horror films we grew up on - a kind of nostalgia for when horror films were fun. Can't wait to show you the whole film... In the meantime, here's the red band trailer we wanted our fans to see."

- Karyn, Diablo, and Jason

Check out this exclusive red-band trailer here, and feel free to share your thoughts!

Music Monday #4

So I totally forgot about 'Music Monday' last week. Oh well...here is my pick for this week. This is a song I first heard on the soundtrack for the movie, Juno. It is called "Sea of Love" by Cat Power. The song was originally written and recorded by Phil Phillips in 1959. It has been covered by many different artists including Del Shannon, The Honeydrippers, and Robert Plant. However, Cat Power's version is by far my favorite. It is a beautiful, yet quite haunting love song.

Happy Friday everyone! Here are the my five awesome picks for the week.

5. "Stand By Me" by Bon Jovi & Andy Madadian
Jon Bon Jovi
went into the recording studio with exiled Iranian singer Andy Madadian to record a new version of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me." The video is intended to support the independence of the Iranian people. The recording was not designed to be sold. Instead, it is meant to be distributed online to demonstrate solidarity with the Iranian protesters (The first verse is sung in Farsi, the language widely spoken in Iran).

4. Root Beer Floats

Root Beer + Ice Cream = crazy delicious.

3. "Poker Face" cover by Chris Daughtry
Chris Daughtry

2. Chicago White Sox

The South-Siders are finally heating up! The White Sox are currently on a 6 game winning streak and are only 2.5 games out of 1st place in the central division. GO SOX!

Fall Movie Previews

The previews before Public Enemies featured some great-looking movies that are coming out this fall. Here are some of the notable ones that I am excited to check out:

Shutter Island (
October 2, 2009)

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams
Director: Martin Scorsese
Plot Summary: The story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the cost of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island's fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane (comingsoon.net)

Award-winning director Martin Scorsese teams up with Leonardo DiCaprio yet again...this time to take on a creepy psychological thriller.

The Informant! (
October 9, 2009)

Starring: Matt Damon, Scott Bakula, Joel McHale
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Plot Summary: A rising star at agri-industry giant Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), Whitacre suddenly turns whistle blower. Even as he exposes his company's multi-national price-fixing conspiracy to the FBI, Whitacre envisions himself being hailed as a hero of the common man and handed a promotion. But before all that can happen, the FBI needs evidence, so Whitacre eagerly agrees to wear a wire and carry a hidden tape recorder in his briefcase, imagining himself as a kind of de facto secret agent. Unfortunately for the FBI, their lead witness hasn't been quite so forthcoming about helping himself to the corporate coffers. Whitacre's ever-changing account frustrates the agents and threatens the case against ADM as it becomes almost impossible to decipher what is real and what is the product of Whitacre's rambling imagination (comingsoon.net)

Matt Damon re-unites with 'Ocean's Eleven' director
Steven Soderbergh to show off his comedic chops in this crazy story that is based on true events.

Couples Retreat (
October 9, 2009)

Starring: Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell
Director: Peter Billingsley
Plot Summary: A group of Midwestern couples embark on a journey to a tropical island resort. While one of the couples is there to work on their marriage, while the others set out to jet ski, spa and enjoy some fun in the sun. They soon discover that participation in the resort’s couples therapy is not optional. Suddenly, their group-rate vacation comes at a price (comingsoon.net)

Funny guys: comedy duo Favreau & Vaughn and Arrested Development's Jason Bateman + Smokin' hot women: Kristin Davis ('Sex and the City'), Malin Akerman ('Watchmen') and Kristen Bell ('Forgetting Sarah Marshall')...I'm sold.

Amelia (
October 23, 2009)

Starring: Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, Ewan McGregor
Director: Mira Nair
Plot Summary:
A look at the life of legendary American pilot Amelia Earhart, who disappeared while flying over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 in an attempt to make a flight around the world (comingsoon.net)

Two time Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank stars in a historical biopic on the incredible life of Amelia Earhart. This film has Oscar-buzz written all over it...

The Return of 'Joe Jams'!

Wow so almost 3 months after the first (and only) "Joe Jams" post, I finally have a second one. This one is in honor of the recently deceased Michael Jackson. The guitar arrangement is based off of KT Tunstall's version. So here it is...my acoustic cover of "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5:

When Did Megan Fox Become So Likeable?

So in the past couple of years Megan Fox has been known for saying some pretty outlandish things and even sometimes coming across as a little rude or insensitive during interviews. Even after reading Entertainment Weekly's recent feature on her, I kind of sensed that same kind of attitude. I was convinced that behind her picture perfect looks was actually just a good-looking girl who thinks she is better than everyone and that this "too good for you" personality was possible her only major flaw.

However
, during her recent media campaign to promote the new Transformers movie she seems to have really lightened up a bit. Although she is still not afraid to be honest about things, she now comes across as much more charming and personable. She demonstrates a great sense of humor and knows not to take all this Transformers hype so seriously. To see what I mean, check out some of these recent interviews with Megan Fox:

Summer Movie Guide (JULY)

Hey guys, it's the last day of June so I thought I would give you a nice little update on some of the big title movies coming out in the month of July that you might want to check out:

SUMMER MOVIE GUIDE - JULY

JULY 1ST

Public Enemies
Starring: Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard
Director: Michael Mann
Trailer: View Here

Holy crap...A summer action film that's based on real-life gangsters and not some big comic book franchise! Throw in two of the biggest stars in Hollywood, an Academy Award-winning actress, and the director of 'Heat' and 'Collateral' and you've got a film that's destined to be great.

JULY 10TH

Brüno
Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen
Director: Larry Charles
Trailer: View Here

Sacha Baron Cohen proves yet again that he is absolutely fearless. Just from the 2 minute trailer we can tell this movie will be bigger, more offensive, and more controversial than 2006's 'Borat.'

JULY 15TH

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Michael Gambon
Director: David Yates
Trailer: View Here

Perhaps the last film of the summer that actually has a chance at giving 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' a run for it's money.

JULY 17TH (Limited release)

(500) Days of Summer
Starring: Zooey Deschanel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Director: Marc Webb
Trailer: View Here

A nice little romantic indie-comedy starring the absolutely adorable Zooey Deschanel and the super underrated Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Although it will probably be limited to very few theaters, this one is definitely a must-see.

JULY 24TH

G-Force
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Tracy Morgan, Sam Rockwell, Penélope Cruz
Director: Hoyt Yeatman
Trailer: View Here

A 3-D Disney family comedy / Jerry Bruckheimer production about guinea pig spies! This movie has summer blockbuster written all over it.

The Ugly Truth
Starring: Gerard Butler, Katherine Heigl
Director: Robert Luketic
Trailer: View Here

Whoa, an R-rated romantic comedy! This one has the potential to beat out 'The Proposal' for "the romantic comedy of the summer"

JULY 31ST

Funny People
Starring: Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann
Director: Judd Apatow
Trailer: View Here

We've seen Adam Sandler do stand-up comedy. We've seen him do drama. So why not combine the two...and then add Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow (the 'King Midas' of comedy films)? This is the movie I have been anxiously waiting for since I saw the trailer back in the beginning of the year.

Beyonce: "He was magic...He was what we all strive to be. He will always be the King of Pop!"

R. Kelly: "I am truly saddened that my mentor, brother, and friend will no longer be with us physically. At the same time, I feel so blessed to have been touched by his music, his dance, his lyrics, and his pure genius. It is because of Michael's yesterday that I am who I am today!"

Cher: "When I think of him, I think of this young boy, this teenager I first met … He was a great teenager, optimistic and adorable."

Every album that he did, it hit you in a way that just made you feel good. It made you feel him and feel his music. He was a genius, a complete genius."

Adam Lambert: "His voice was just one of a kind. No one else sounds like him. Furthermore, the visual stuff he brought to the table was so groundbreaking and edgy and ahead of its time, in a way. There wasn't anyone else really going out there like that."

'Picks of the Week' (June 26th)

Here are the top five things I am loving this week:

5. "21 Guns" by Green Day

Simple melody, super catchy hook, and lots of political angst: After eight studio albums, the classic pop-punk trio has still got it.

4. Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Earlier this week USA Today released some concept art and publicity images from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland including this creepy image of Johnny Depp as the 'Mad Hatter.' These fantastic images just give me more reason to be excited for the film's March 2010 release.

3. Away We Go

A great little summer indie-comedy directed by Sam Mendes (Revolutionary Road, American Beauty) starring The Office's John Krasinski and former SNL member Maya Rudolph). The film takes us on a hilarious, yet heartfelt journey of an expecting couple struggling to find themselves. Outstanding performances from the two stars as well as the supporting cast that includes some familiar faces.

2. Megan Fox in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Say what you want about the Transformers sequel. Sure it was too loud, too long, and too over-the-top...but what the hell were you expecting?? Love it or hate it, I hope we can all agree on the choice to give it's super sexy co-star much more screen-time this time around...and you gotta admit: her acting has improved...a little...kind of.

1. The Music of Michael Jackson

Like most of the world, I was shocked and devastated when I heard the news about the sudden death of Michael Jackson, one of the biggest superstars in the world. But rather than dwelling on the negative, I think we should celebrate Michael's amazing life. Although he is no longer with us, Michael Jackson will live on forever with his legacy of No. 1 hits, ground-breaking performances and astounding dance moves. So what better way to remember "The King of Pop" than through the fantastic music he shared with the world:
