Warner Bros. Picture has hired Ryan Reynolds to play the title role in the highly anticipated Green Lantern, their live-action film based on the popular DC Comics superhero. Other actors who were in the running included The Hangover star Bradley Cooper and famous pop-star Justin Timberlake. The film will be directed by Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, Casino Royale) and produced by Donald De Lin and Greg Berlanti. Berlanti along with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green wrote the script. Production is expected to start in January 2010 and the film is scheduled for a June 17, 2011 release.
This is turning out to be quite a memorable summer for Ryan Reynolds. Earlier this summer, Reynolds had a supporting role as Deadpool in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", a performance that prompted Fox to begin development on a spin-off film to which Reynolds is attached. He then followed that by starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy "The Proposal," which crossed the $100 million mark this week.
The actor will next star in a dark indie drama called "Buried" that will start filming shortly in Barcelona with Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes. Reynolds will be playing a civilian contractor who is kidnapped in Iraq and awakes in a coffin, struggling against time to coordinate a rescue even though he doesn't know where he's buried in the desert.
